What the Great American Health Care Debate Has Devolved Into

A shouting match of ignorance.health care reform

Why can no one talk about health care reform like an adult? Why does every discussion deteriorate into a fist fight within 2 minutes?

I’m tired of baseless propaganda from both sides.

The way I see it you have 2 options:

You can just let Capitalism do its thing — you’ve got health insurance which you pay for so fuck everyone else if you make too little to have an employer insure you. Or you can provide a minimum level of coverage for all — for a cost.

On one side, Capitalism doesn’t give a fuck about anyone. On the other, there is a stop-gap in place for society as a whole.

If you stop and think about it we’re all paying for either option out of our own pocket, it’s just a matter of which pot gets filled.

Farfalle with Broccoli

Haven’t made a foodie post in a while, so here’s a great summerish pasta dish I made for C which turned out AWESOME…

Farfalle with Broccoli
Adapted from foodnetwork.com.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound farfalle pasta
  • 2 heads broccoli, trimmed to florets (about 4 cups)
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 5 strips cooked turkey bacon, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook, stirring occasionally. After 5 minutes, add the broccoli florets to the pasta and stir and cook for another 4 minutes. Drain pasta and broccoli, reserving 1 cup of the pasta water.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the garlic, anchovies, and red pepper flakes and cook for 5 minutes. Add the broccoli, pasta, salt and pepper and toss. Add some of the reserved pasta water, if necessary, to make a light sauce. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with Parmesan.

DetroitCIO Magazine becomes the latest publication to pile onto Detroit:

It’s easy to pick on poor Detroit, but it would hardly be any IT staffer’s destination of choice right now. What’s left of the tech jobs at automobile industry companies that haven’t already been outsourced (see: GM) is quite low as those companies and their suppliers try to survive bankruptcy and the global recession. Detroit also has the distinction of being named to the top 10 of Forbes’ “Fastest Dying U.S. Cities” list.

Way to kick us when we’re down. Thankfully I have a job right now, but who knows these days…

Today is our 2nd anniversary. I can’t believe how time flies, yet I feel like we’ve been together forever (in a good way). I am so thankful for Christa, and so thankful that she is my wife.
